Google & The China-Hack!

Hmm, imagine this – The C-HACK! of 2009
Update (2/7/2010) – it will be interesting to see ‘the facts’ for this event – A post by Bruce Schneier (1/23/2010) on the CNN web provides some additional thoughts, i.e. Are we doing this to ourselves? (Do our national policies increase the chances that these types of events [...]

Dlink DIR-615 – review – buggy device

Your mileage should vary, but for me this device was both a poor/bad investment and a trouble-shooting time hog. I picked this up at Office Depot for $20 (regular price ~$50.)  While relatively simple to configure (via a web interface) the device seems to have performance issues (i.e. both dropping established wireless connections as well [...]

Rails – simple problems

NOTE – I’m simply writing about what I find as I explore Ruby on Rails (ROR) – your mileage should vary but chances are you landed here due to a long tail search. Since I am not a Ruby or ROR expert it is quite possible for me to discover a solution or approach [...]

Search Engines – what’s missing?

We have some great generic search tools and a few engines with specific knowledge domains:

generic search from indexed, traditional content from web pages, books and other ‘published’ media (i.e. typical search using Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.)
computational  search – connect user input with some sense of context (i.e. WolframAlpha – user provide numbers and the engine [...]

Your App is sooooo Ugly…

I chuckled when I came across this from BlackHat 2009 Presentation discussing Cross-Site Scripting (XSS – bad/hacked site has you running ’stuff’ on another, undisclosed site) and Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF – an attack where a user is authenticated on site A and the forgery causes un-wanted actions via site B):
“APIs are the new hotness…”
“Your [...]

Bing at one month – :)

I did not enjoy previous search experiences presented by Microsoft – I sampled them and found them to be full of less than optimized results (too much junk or non-relevant content and results full of ‘index’ sites.)
I like the new presentation of Bing (a nice daily photo with an un-cluttered layout.) At this point [...]

Recent Google search enhancements

In case you did not notice, there are some interesting new features in Google search – the video below (from Google) provides a quick introduction.  Note the new types of relationships as well as time-sensitive options that are now possible.

Email and Web use privacy (html Beacons)

Today I received a couple of emails about an old issue – your privacy…
Note – my guess is that *every* provider of ‘free services’ (email, email-lists/groups, web sites, etc.) is going to do their best to monetize their ’service’.  While free services sure are convenient, nice, nifty, etc – they do have a price – [...]

SCIK – Superior Content is King, right?

Naw, you just need to be viral, right?

If you are an IT problem solver then there is a good chance that you use one or more search engines on a daily basis.  Why go through the hassles usually encountered to resolve complex technical problems when, using a search engine you can cut the time needed to resolve the issue by reading how Joe resolved IT?  This site is one example

Fedora 9 Yum error: no id element found

Things are great when they work! Some recent change (around 11/14/2008) to the Yum Extender (or a change to some underlying component) caused it to ‘break’ – since there are quite a few users of this (very nice) package problem reports surfaced quickly (probably within hours or even minutes of the problem…)

If you are not using the Yum Extender then you are missing a great, simple GUI tool for
