USB (serial) GPS troubleshooting…

By Dale Reagan | August 1, 2010

Sequence seems to matter more in some instances than in others.  In this case the OS (Windows 7) combined is a USB serial connected device was problematic. If the GPS device (essentially a direct connected, serial device being used without a device/brand specific ‘driver’ was causing problems) was turned on BEFORE the laptop then the mouse would behave in a non-desired fashion (seems the OS was confused by the signals coming from the device – the OS treated the signals on the USB port as an external, secondary mouse.)

The scenario:

The problem(s):

The Solution arrived at after a bit of tinkering:

While not ideal, the sequencing solution did produce consistent results 4/4 times – of course your mileage may vary… 🙂

A bit of searching indicates that this may be a common serial port problem with Microsoft Windows OS versions (I found posts referring to Windows XP; I encountered the problem under Windows 7…)  A common solution suggested for XP is to change some registry settings (caution! you can create problems if you change the wrong items…)  The tool used to make such changes is called ‘regedit’ – you can run it by selecting a) the Windows key and b) typing ‘regedit’ and pressing the ENTER key.  Then you locate and change the values below (if present…)

  1. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sermouse] "Start"=dword:00000004
  2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\sermouse] "Start"=dword:00000004

This *may* work for Windows 7, however I did not confirm – backup your Registry prior to making any changes…
