Sand Mandala-Tibetan Monks return to Savannah this June
If you missed the previous events this is truly a fascinating process to observe (many of the images on this site are from the last visit by monks from this monastery.) I suggest visiting at least twice (once early in the week and once later in the week; there was quite a crowd at the final ceremony during the last Savannah mandala event in 2006.)
“The Tibetan monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to the Telfair this June, marking one of Savannah’s most anticipated events. During a weeklong residency at the Jepson Center, the monks will create a Sita Tara mandala—an intricate sand painting honoring a female Buddha of health and longevity…” There are several related events during this special week:
- June 1, 6 pm Opening Ceremony
- June 2-6 Creation of Sita Tara Mandala
- June 3-29 Savannah Mandala Photography Exhibition
- June 4, 6 pm Monks’ Lecture: “The Tibetan Sita Tara Mandala”
- June 7, 1 pm Closing Ceremony and Dismantling of the Mandala
Make sure to check out the other areas of the Jepson while you are there – and bring a friend or two! Note that the Telfair Museum (host for the event) has three different buildings (two off of Telfair Square.)
