Are you (is IT?) a cost center?
Are you an cost center/expense or a solution/innovation resource?
What is your IT group contribution to the company’s bottom line? As long as IT is viewed as a cost center your position/group/efforts are short term and so is your job…
There are a number of small companies where all information technology (IT) service needs are out-sourced (i.e. managed services for email, web services, accounting, applications, etc.) This can be great for such small companies (relatively low cost, convenient, instant expandability, 24×7x365 support, etc.) If the company grows it will eventually reach a point where either:
- a seasoned systems resource person will be needed to manage these managed services OR
- a full-time, on-staff resource will be required as you bring critical components in-house
Managed services may not make sense if:
- you have a need for a high level of on-site technical expertise, or
- you can’t locate a provider offering the level of attention or performance that you require, or
- you work with highly sensitive data.
If you are already the in-house resource (or department) then you should be working to:
- maximize your business value (usefulness/productivity) and
- make sure that value is communicated.
Is your IT leadership (are you?) delivering and communicating your value up the chain?
